With only a few locations in existence, a body farm is a controlled environment that is designed to study human decomposition. The first such facility was opened in 1981 at the University of Tennessee. The bodies are placed in a variety of situations and environments where students and researchers can document the decomposition process. Many of the bodies are donated to the programs, though some were bodies that went unclaimed at morgues.
