Believing that the ship he was working on was unfit for use on the seas, sailor Alexander Selkirk attempted to convince his shipmates to abandon their posts and stay behind while the ship was docked at a small island. When the captain heard of Selkirk’s plans to desert, he left him behind on the island, all by himself. He had a few tools, some clothes, a Bible, and a musket, but with limited powder. Selkirk would remain on the island for over four years, completely alone, before being rescued. The novel Robinson Crusoe is likely based on Selkirk’s story.
