Trepanation is possibly the world’s oldest surgical procedure and involves drilling a hole into the skull. Archaeologists have found cave paintings and other evidence to support the idea that the procedure was performed in prehistoric times. These ancient people felt that trepanning would drive away evil spirits. Some modern practitioners feel that trepanation can be used “to increase brain blood volume”, or even to treat depression.
