Existing when the body’s muscles are entirely paralyzed, locked-in syndrome is the term for a person who is conscious, but unable to move or speak. It can result from many causes, but damage to the lower portion of the brain is usually the overriding cause. Locked-in syndrome has no cure, and treatments are still in the early stages. Many times, the eye can still be moved, as was the case with Jean-Dominique Bauby, whose story was told in the book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly as well as the film of the same name.
