The Bonus Army was comprised of 17,000 World War I veterans and their supporters seeking compensation for their time served during the war. Service Certificates were given to veterans and were valued according to a promised payment plus the compound interest of the payment when it matured after 20 years. The marchers did not want to wait the full 20 years before receiving payment and staged a march in the spring and summer of 1932, resulting in an armed conflict between the U.S. Army and its own veterans.
