Mehran Karimi Nasseri is an Iranian refugee who lived in Charles de Gaulle Airport in France for 18 years and whose story was the inspiration for the film The Terminal starring Tom Hanks. Having been a refugee in Belgium, Nasseri (also known as Sir, Alfred Mehran) had gone to live in the United Kingdom. He lost his papers in Paris and was thereafter unable to enter any country legally. Thus, he took up residence in the departure lounge of Terminal One at the airport where he was supported by airport workers who gave him food. He remained at the airport until he was hospitalized in July of 2006 and currently lives in a shelter in Paris.
