The Silver Spring Monkeys were 17 macaque monkeys that were used at the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland for neurological studies. Due to an extended legal battle surrounding the animals, they were referred to as “the most famous lab animals in history” by one writer. Psychologist Edward Taub used them as research subjects and deaffrented (severed the sensory nerves of) the monkeys in order to research the effects that it would have on the animals. Alex Pacheco, the founder of PETA, volunteered at the lab and reported the poor conditions of the research facility to the authorities, leading to the trial for custody of the monkeys.
