Unidentified body on Christmas Island

In 1942, the remains of an unidentified sailor were found on a life raft in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Christmas Island. It is unclear for certain, but generally believed that the corpse is that of a sailor who was on board the HMAS Sydney, a ship that sank near Western Australia in 1941 after a sea battle against a German cruiser. The wreck of the Sydney was not located until 2008, and no survivors or even remains of crewmen were ever found. A shoe that did not belong to the dead man was found in the raft, and a hole, likely caused by a bullet, was also discovered on the raft itself. Additionally, a piece of metal was found in the skull of the dead man, which may have been a piece of shrapnel but was likely not a bullet.
