Haing S. Ngor is only the second non-professional actor to win an Academy Award for acting, having won for his role as refugee journalist Dith Pran in the film The Killing Fields. In real life, Ngor experienced the persecution and suffering dramatized in the film. He worked as a surgeon and gynecologist in Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge regime seized control of the country in the 1970s. Educated professionals were specifically targeted, and Ngor had to hide his medical skills even when his wife required a Cesarean section while giving birth in a concentration camp. She died as a result, but had he revealed himself as a doctor, both he and his wife would have died, and likely the baby as well. In 1996, Ngor was murdered in Los Angeles under suspicious circumstances.
