Having gone without sleep for 264 hours (11 days), Randy Gardner — at the time a 17 year old high school student — holds the record for the longest scientifically documented period of natural sleep deprivation. Scientists monitoring the study reported that Gardner suffered paranoia and hallucinations as early as four days into his record-breaking sleeplessness marathon. Multiple individuals have subsequently exceeded the 264 mark set by Gardner, although his is the only achievement documented in a scientific study.
