In 1958, a radio station in Luxembourg issued a challenge: transport three tons of ice to the Equator without the use of refrigeration and be rewarded with a monetary prize for each kilogram that arrived intact. The next year, Glassvatt, a Norwegian company specializing in insulation, accepted the challenge and used a combination of wood and glass wool to insulate the ice for the 27 day journey. The ice block transported lost only 11% of its weight during the trip, and the ice block expedition of 1959, which came to be referred to as “the world’s greatest publicity stunt”, was a huge success.
