Taking place in the late stages of World war II, Task Force Baum was a secret mission organized by General George S. Patton that sent over 300 men and nearly 60 vehicles fifty miles behind German lines to liberate a prisoner of war camp. The mission was a total failure, with 32 men killed in action and all but 35 of the remaining men taken captive. All vehicles, including 16 tanks and 28 half-tracks, were lost or destroyed. The mission may have been designed by Patton solely as a rescue mission, as his son-in-law was one of the prisoners at the camp.
