Leopold and Loeb were two extremely intelligent law students who drew up plans for committing “the perfect crime”. In 1924, the plans — over a year in the making — became reality as the duo kidnapped and then murdered a 14 year old boy named Bobby Franks. The two were motivated by the thrill and excitement of attempting to pull off the crime, and though they asked for a ransom while claiming to have the boy held, money was not a factor as the two were exceptionally wealthy. The duo was undone by a pair of very distinct eyeglasses found where the boy’s body was discovered. The trial was a public sensation and was one of the first to be dubbed “Trial of the Century”, and the two were sentenced to life in prison.
