Taman Shud Case

On December 1, 1948, an unidentified man was found dead on a beach in Australia. The case became known as the “Mystery of the Somerton Man”, as the man who was found that day on Somerton Beach was never identified, nor was it determined just how he had died. The initial autopsy pointed to poisoning as a likely cause of death. A suitcase had been left unattended at a local rail station, and police came to believe it belonged to the dead man. Labels on the clothes, which may have contained the name of the “Somerton Man”, had been removed. A scrap of paper was found in a pocket of the clothes with the phrase “Taman Shud” printed on it. It was found that the phrase translated to “the end” and originated in a poem by Omar Khayyam. Authorities theorized that the man had committed suicide by poisoning.
