Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Categories : Places & Locations

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge mass of plastic debris and other associated trash that has collected in an area of the Pacific Ocean. The “trash vortex” floats just below the surface of the water, so it is not visible in satellite imagery, making definitive size judgments difficult. Nevertheless, it has been estimated that the size of this garbage patch that has formed in the North Pacific Gyre is twice the size of Texas. The majority of the debris is from land-based sources with currents carrying the garbage from North America and Asia. Collection and clean-up plans are currently being researched and formulated.
