Hollywood accounting is a phrase used to describe the practices of movie studios and financial backers of films whereby the money earned from a project is redistributed to separate corporate entities that are in fact owned by the same people who own the film studio. This practice is used to reduce or even eliminate the profits earned by movies so that these financial backers will then have to pay much less in royalties and profit-sharing proceeds to those involved in the project. Due to Hollywood accounting, it is reported that only 5% of films end up reporting a net profit. Most film stars thus regard net profit points — a percentage share of the net profit of a film — as essentially worthless.
