Pine Tar Incident

The Pine Tar Incident is a famous moment in baseball history that occurred in a game between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees in 1983. Trailing by one run with two outs in the 9th inning, the Royals’ George Brett hit a go-ahead two run home run. The umpires then ruled that his bat, which contained a large amount of pine tar, violated the rule for a substance covering the bat, and Brett was ruled out. The home run was nullified and the game over, but the Royals appealed and the game was resumed twenty-five days later with the home run standing (but Brett ejected due to his tirade upon being called out after the home run). The Royals ended up winning the game despite the fervent protests of the New York Yankees.
