Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph depicting six U.S. servicemen raising an American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. The photograph was taken by Joe Rosenthal early on in the battle, and subsequently three of those men seen in the photo would perish before the battle would end over one month later. The flag raising event documented in the photo was actually the second such flag raising at the summit, and many claimed that it was staged for the camera. This was not true, and in fact Rosenthal nearly missed capturing the shot. The story of the photograph and the men involved is documented in the book and film Flags of Our Fathers.
