Manfred von Richthofen

Manfred von Richthofen was a famous flying ace in World War I who is more commonly known as the “Red Baron”. He was the most successful fighter pilot in the German Army Air Service and was credited with 80 victories during his career. His nickname derives from his family’s aristocratic background and the color of his plane. He commanded the famed “Flying Circus”, one of the most successful German flying units in World War I. The Red Baron was shot down and killed in April of 1918 under mysterious circumstances. He was making an uncharacteristically foolish pursuit of a single target when he was wounded by a bullet that is believed to have been fired from the ground.
