A spite house is a building that is designed, constructed, or modified in such a way as to cause a purposeful disturbance or annoyance to the area. These spite houses are not intended to be comfortable dwellings but instead serve to irritate neighbors or act as an obstruction. The most famous example of a spite house is considered to be the “Richardson Spite House”, formerly located in New York City. It was an apartment complex built after a dispute over a piece of land, and the building was 104 feet long but only five feet wide. Modern examples of spite houses include homeowners painting their houses in what would be considered distasteful colors.
