Dieter Dengler was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War whose capture and imprisonment in Laos as a POW was the subject of the film Rescue Dawn. The prison camp was operated by the Pathet Lao, and Dengler was held there along with six other prisoners. The group made plans for an escape, and ultimately only Dengler and one other man, Pisidhi Indradat, were rescued. Even after his daring escape, Dengler had to survive for 23 days in the jungle before being sighted by an Air Force pilot. Duane W. Martin, with whom Dengler had escaped, was murdered by a villager during the time that he and Dengler were on the run after escaping from the POW camp.
