Jim Creighton was the first superstar in baseball, as well as the first professional baseball player, playing in the mid 1800s. Creighton excelled as both a hitter and a pitcher. His fastball was unthinkably quick, so much so that both players and the press questioned its legality (rules restricted pitchers to throwing underhanded and with a locked elbow and wrist). Additionally, he developed the first change-up. Creighton was also a standout at the plate, and in the 1862 season, the belief is that he did not make one out at the plate. In October of that year, however, Creighton died suddenly. Some believe that he swung so hard at a pitch that he suffered an internal injury, as he died a few hours later.
