James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh
James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh was a Scot who, in 1570, committed the first assassination with the use of a firearm (in this case, a carabine of nearly three and a half feet in length). Hamilton’s victim was James Stewart, a Regent of Scotland, with whom he and his family had been feuding for some time. The assassination itself was well planned and took a great deal of time to carry out, as Hamilton had stalked Stewart through many cities before the perfect opportunity finally presented itself.
